God, GM was so freaking on point in the ‘50s, not a single misplaced line or bad angle.

And this was the gussied up 2nd facelift of the 1955 design.
Paint scheme isn’t original, but these had some good lines.

Why did they shave the rear door handles?

They also shaved the rear door handles, I think the wheel size is original in diameter, or close to it, though obviously wider.

Ha, didn’t notice the door handles, distract ed by the 3 tone paint.
The wheels suit the paint job too, I think.

Boils down to “I wanted a two door / Nomad but those are too freaking expensive so I’ll shave the handles to make it look less like a four door”. I’ve seen others that went so far as to weld the rear doors up and make the seams disappear completely. Personally I say if you could only swing the four door, own it and accept it. It still looks cooler than 95% of the stuff on the road today anyway.

I think I tend to like Bill Mitchell’s work even more than Harley Earl’s.

Nice ‘ 57 station wagon.
I’m always a little surprised when owners decide to shave the rear handles on a 4-doo r. I mean, I get why ...they want it to look like a 2 door but you don’t have a 2 door, own it.
If you’re going to shave handles, do it to all doors.

They are nice, I prefer a 56 myself, less flashy.
